        Location to highclere castle

Reception staff not friendly. Bar prices high. Poor breakfast assortment and when 9am arrived made to feel like we should get up and leave. Waste bin in bathroom not emptied.

the restuarant and its staff were lovely . the food was beautiful.totally different from the hotel

on arrival 13th july the receptionist was disinterested and unobliging. If that were my business I certaily would not have her as my first point of contact. There was no greeting only apathy. my sister had to change her room as it looked out directly onto a fence which made her room dark. the rooms were not clean and it was hit and miss with biscuits , milk etc. the beds were very comfy , shower very small. the corridor was generally very shabby and in need of an update and there appeared to be a stain that looked like dried blood outside our room on the carpet. breakfast was appalling. supposed to be continental.only cereal ,croissants ,sweaty cheese and meat that did not look fresh. we asked for yoghurts and some jams. if you upgraded to an english breakfast there was no toast and one morning no black pudding and the next morning no tomatoes. i felt for the money it was not good value and very poor that you had to pay for a breakfast when items were missing.

Could be very comfortable but rooms need a bit of care and attention, carpets a bit dirty and a lick of paint would really make things feel luxurious. Restaurant and bar area is very nice although menu is a bit limited and pricey, the food was good. Staff not very attentive, and appear a little lacking in interest, would not describe them as unfriendly but not welcoming either. Overall a nice place with a comfortable feel.

We did not receive our breakfast coffee until we had finished the meal. Whilst attending a function in Burghclere we had been tipped off that standards had slipped, particularly with regard to service. This proved to be correct, although the one girl who served breakfast could not be faulted as she had too much to cope with. It was regrettable that two others who were wandering around did not help in any way, supposedly because it was not their business!! We had stayed before and may well wish to again, but hopefully standards will be higher in future.

It was a convenient location to visit a gourmet restaurant in the neighbouring village. Nice, modern furnishings. Ample parking.

The room we had (room 115) was very small and cramped. The bathroom was smelly - there was no ventilation so it was smelling a bit damp. The service at breakfast was poor with very little in the way of selection and they ran out of cereal bowls and spoons about mid-way through the 2 hour breakfast slot.

Nice surroundings.Pleasant well run bar.Attractive dining room.Good atmosphere.

T his was our third visit. We found our room(123) very small & dark as there was a fence outside blocking the light. We were disappointd with thedinner menu------the food was well prepared but the choice was not to our taste & we felt it to be expensive--ie the sardine starter consisted of 3 small dry fish,& salad garnish & cost £7. We went to breakfast at 8.15 (open until 9 ) & found a lot of the items missing ie yoghourt, marmalade, croissant, orange juice etc. The service was poor & we were continually having to ask for things.

Staff very friendly and helpful and food was excellent.

The gardener started mowing the lawn right outside the bedroom window just before 8 on a Saturday morning which we thought was a bit anti- social! The showers in the rooms are very small and might prove a problem for the larger person. The only other quibble was that we ran out of toilet roll as the roll was nearly empty and no-one had replaced it when they cleaned the room and we also did have to ask for more tea, coffee, sugar and milk as none of these had been replaced either.

The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. Food was good.

Getting from reception and restaurant mean a very short walk outside. In february this wasn't ideal.

        The quality of the room

Didnt appear on the satnav and apparently it is a common problem according to the staff

Location for the purpose of the visit to the area

Amateur operation. reception difficult to find. The restaurant was the worst feature. Out of ten people in our party 40 per cent felt that they did not want to chose anything on the starter or main course menus. Eventually Rump Steaks were offered. Nouveau Cuisine gone wrong in a big way. Chef must have watched too many television programmes. Were offered Chateaubriand at £70 for two people - more than 50 per cent over the odds- quite extortionate and so refused. Choice of breakfast cerals limited. Surprised that cooked breakfast was not included in price.

Bed was Comfortable and room had a powerful shower. Room had ample space

Cleaning was a bit haphazard with tea bags/milk seemingly left at random food was nice but over priced in my opinion

I didn't feel it was very good value. The hotel looks a bit tired and there is no bath with the room. The room was small.

        Good location for Highclere

failed to service the room on the sunday - we had to get the duty manager to clean room and make the bed

      • Older travelers
        6.2

Comfortable room. Excellent location for visiting Highclere castle.

Standard of breakfast service was very poor as management had not ensured enough staff on duty for number of guests staying to attend Battle Proms at Highclere castle.
